HoudahGeo vs EasyGeotag
Both apps put GPS coordinates into your photos on a Mac. HoudahGeo is a long-established, Mac-only tool with a wide range of inputs. EasyGeotag is newer and narrower: an iPhone that records the track, and a Mac or iPad that writes it. Which one fits depends mostly on where your location data comes from.
Choose HoudahGeo if…
- Your tracks come in formats other than GPX. HoudahGeo reads GPX, NMEA, Garmin FIT and Wintec TES; EasyGeotag reads GPX only (every Garmin device and service can also export GPX).
- You want to geotag from reference photos — shots taken with a GPS-enabled camera or phone at the same time — rather than from a track. EasyGeotag does not do that.
- You only ever work on a Mac and do not need a phone logger.
Choose EasyGeotag if…
- You want your iPhone to be the GPS logger. The EasyGeotag iPhone app records the trip in your pocket, and the trip appears on your Mac and iPad through your own iCloud account. Recording is free.
- You want to geotag on an iPad as well as a Mac — for example, straight from a card reader while travelling. The iPad runs the same workspace as the Mac.
- You want a clear view of how much to trust each match: every photo shows how far it sat from the nearest real GPS fix, and a camera clock offset can be set from one photo of a clock.
Side by side
- Platforms. HoudahGeo: Mac. EasyGeotag: iPhone (recording), Mac and iPad (geotagging).
- Track formats. HoudahGeo: GPX, NMEA, FIT, TES. EasyGeotag: GPX, or its own iPhone recordings.
- Other sources. Both let you drag photos onto a map by hand. HoudahGeo can also copy locations from reference photos.
- Place names. Both fill in city, region and country so photos are searchable by place.
- RAW. Both handle RAW. EasyGeotag writes into the RAW file on Mac with the bundled ExifTool and uses an XMP sidecar on iPad; HoudahGeo also supports XMP sidecars. More on RAW.
- Price. HoudahGeo sells a perpetual licence that includes 12 months of updates, with paid upgrades after that. EasyGeotag is a free download with five free photos, then a one-time $14.99 in-app purchase covering Mac, iPad and iPhone, with Family Sharing.
